Biotechnology and Developing Countries
This unit aims to stimulate discussion in the classroom about
the relationship between the Third World and the Industrial World.
It is a collection of materials presenting information and ideas
concerning both the impact of biotechnology on developing countries,
and the relationship between industrial and developing countries
with regard to modern biotechnology.
The unit focuses on rice production, as rice, being a staple
food for one third of the world's population, provides an appropriate
example for considering the question: Would the introduction
of genetic modified crops into third world be beneficial? If
so, beneficial to whom?
