A model European Council: Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis.
It is now possible to select an embryo that is free of certain
genetic traits such as some inherited diseases. In future it
maybe possible to select for desirable traits. Where does one
draw the line? This unit offers a framework for debating the
social, political and ethical issues raised by pre-implantation
diagnosis.
In a simulation of a meeting of the Council of Ministers of
the European Union, students are asked to put forward the views
of different countries. Background materials to help ministers
prepare for the meeting are supplied. It is highly recommended
however that participants do as much of their own research as
possible. This will motivate them to take an active part in discussions
and will bring them up to date with recent developments.
